The following 11 micrographs (a-k) are views of a serially-sectioned
contracted Vorticella convallaria cell (obtained from Cambridge
Culture Collection, Cambridge, England, # LB1690/1) fixed in collidine
buffered solution that show the main features of this cell. Figure 1a
shows 3 food vacuoles (fv) (of a total of about 15 in the
cell) containing bacteria and part of a trochal band of basal bodies
(bb) that surrounds the aboral scopular zone where the stalk
originates. EM taken on 4/2/71 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM.
