More posteriorly the peniculi are reduced to three rows of cilia and
the four rows of the quadrulus have come together. The cytopharynx has
expanded over much of the upper and left side of the buccal cavity.
The ribbed wall covers the right side and the filamentous reticulum
covers the floor. The cytostome is a two dimensional opening
separating the buccal cavity from the cytopharynx. Cytopharyngeal
ribbons of microtubules transport vesicles to the cytopharyngeal
membrane to provide for food vacuole (phagosome) formation. In
addition bundles of microtubules accumulate along the cytosolic side
of the ribbed wall and will come together to form the postoral
microtubular bundles that guide the newly released food vacuole to the
cell’s posterior end. EM taken on 1/31/74 by R. Allen with Hitachi
