We raised monoclonal antibodies (mAb) to membrane fractions of P.
multimicronucleatum. A. One mAb, DS-1, was shown to heavily label the outer margins of the radial arms corresponding to the periphery of the collecting canals. No label was found around the CV or ampullae. Thus a 25µm diameter zone in the center of the CVC is free of label. This was true of both anterior and posterior CVCs. The number of radial arms, 7 and 10 in this cell, can vary from CVC to CVC, from cell to cell and from species to species. MAb DS-1 is specific for antigen A4 (arbitrary code). Picture taken by M. Aihara. Published in J. Cell Sci. 96:469-475, 1990. B. At higher magnification of the radial arms a central less-fluorescent line occupies the center of each radial arm. This shows that the smooth spongiome and collecting canals do not contain the antigen that this mAb labels. Picture taken by M. Aihara. Published in J. Cell Sci. 96:469-475, 1990.
