Fig. 18: spongiomes back-filled with tannic acid

This cell was incubated in tannic acid after it had been fixed for electron microscopy. The tannic acid was able to enter the collecting canal, presumably through a break in the cell surface at or near the CV pore which permitted the tannic acid to permeate the collecting canal thereby showing the associations between the collecting canal with the smooth spongiome. The tannic acid was also found to enter the decorated tubules (ds) establishing a connection between the smooth and decorated spongiomes. EM taken on 1/19/94 by M. Ishida with Zeiss 10A TEM.
