Fig. 16: freeze fractured collecting canal

Conventional freeze fracture of the collecting canal (cc), smooth membranes (ss) and decorated tubules (ds). Rows of fractured necks can be seen where the smooth spongiome empties into the collecting canal. These rows are separated by the space where segments of microtubular ribbons (not visible) lie against the collecting canal membrane. The smooth spongiome and decorated spongiome do not present a flat surface for fracturing and so appear as a hodgepodge of disconnected fractured tubules. EM taken on 12/10/75 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM. Neg. 12,250X. Bar = 0.5µm. Published in Eur. J. Cell Biol. 15:303-320, 1977.
