Conventional freeze fracture of the collecting canal (cc),
smooth membranes (ss) and decorated tubules (ds). Rows
of fractured necks can be seen where the smooth spongiome empties into
the collecting canal. These rows are separated by the space where
segments of microtubular ribbons (not visible) lie against the
collecting canal membrane. The smooth spongiome and decorated
spongiome do not present a flat surface for fracturing and so appear
as a hodgepodge of disconnected fractured tubules. EM taken on
