Fig. 12: collecting canal attachment to CV

The connection of an ampulla to the CV when the ampulla is attached to and open to the CV. Just before systole this connection will be severed from the CV. There is no sign here of constriction fibers to account for this severing. Presumably the increase in membrane tension that the CV membrane undergoes at the rounding phase (see Tani, Allen and Naitoh, J. Cell Sci. 114:785-795, 2000) just prior to systole puts strain on the CV-ampullae connections and causes these restricted necks to undergo stress and severing. Attachment of membranes to the microtubular ribbons together with CV rounding may pull the membrane apart permitting fission to occur. Whatever the reason it appears that the CV-ampullae connections undergo fission and then reform in each CV cycle. EM taken on 3/21/80 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM. Neg. 12,250X. Bar = 0.5µm.
