Once the phagosome pinches off from the cytopharynx it and its docked
acidosomes move rapidly to the posterior end of the cell. Here the
acidosomes fuse with the phagosome membrane (cp) (for sidedness
of label see Allen et al., J. Cell Sci. 108:1263-1274, 1995). The
trigger for this regulated fusion has not been studied but, if like
other forms of regulated membrane fusions, it probably involves a
local increase in calcium. Fusion of acidosomes with the phagosome can
begin to occur within seconds of phagosome release and appears to
involve most acidosomes at the same time. This image shows that fusion
necks of several acidosomes (arrowheads) appear simultaneously
