Fig. 24: freeze fracture detail of the fluted cytopharynx membrane and acidosome impressions

A freeze-fracture replica of the cytopharynx showing the pleated cytopharyngeal membrane that covers the ends of the microtubular ribbons. Impressions of the docked acidosomes are seen on the expanse of the nascent vacuole membrane. In the lower half of the picture the fracture plane passes through discoidal vesicles ready to fuse with the cytopharyngeal (cp) membrane and acidosomes either docked at the nascent vacuole membrane that has been fractured away in this area or are ready to dock with the vacuole. A portion of a digestive vacuole surrounded by lysosomes lies to the lower right. The vacuole contains bacteria. A band of IMPs runs along the terminal ends of alveoli (al). cc, cytostomal cord; tric, trichocyst; qu, quadrulus; dor pen, dorsal peniculus. EM taken on 9/28/78 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM.
