Fig. 21: vesicles transported on one side of cytopharyngeal ribbons

The cytopharyngeal ribbons extend far out into the cytosol. Discoidal vesicles bind to one side of these ribbons. This cell was placed in HRP which entered vesicles formed at the open cytoproct when spent digestive vacuoles were defecated. The tubular vesicles are transformed into discoidal vesicles as they bind to and move along the anterior side of the ribbons. The spent vacuole membrane is, in this way, recycled back to the cytopharynx to form new food vacuoles. Two acidosomes (ac) are attached to a second ribbon but on the opposite side from discoidal vesicles. EM taken on 7/29/80 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM. Neg. 6,500X. Bar = 1µm.
