A freeze fracture view of the P-face of the plasma membrane in which
the underlying alveoli are expanded. The fractured off cilia occupy
the bases of the surface depressions. IMP double rings lie between the
cilia (arrowheads) in each kinetal (ciliary) row. A rosette of
about 8 IMPs forms a circle in the center of the double ring. This
rosette is linked to the trichocyst membrane (see Fig. 2) at the
trichocyst’s tip. The double rings are linked to the underlying edges
of the alveoli that form the septum through which the trichocyst
passes to dock at the plasma membrane. Normally trichocysts are
aligned only along the row of cilia, however, in this image extra
trichocyst fusion sites (arrows) are found to the sides of the
ciliary rows. EM taken on 6/4/73 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM.
