Micronuclei in interphase and in mitosis. These cells were labeled
with the lectin concanavalin A conjugated with FITC which, in
particular, labels the nuclear envelope binding to simple
oligosaccharides containing mannose sugars. a) A strain of
P. multimicronucleatum originally obtained from Carolina
Biological Supply Co. (CBSC) (Burlington, NC) has 4 tiny micronuclei
each about 2.5µm in diameter, two on each side of the macronucleus.
Bar = 25µm. b) Another strain of P. multimicronucleatum
originally obtained from NASCO (Fort Atkinson, WI) shows three larger
(~5µm diameter) micronuclei. Bar = 25µm. c) A dividing cell of
the CBSC strain shows two extremely long thin division spindles
separating the anaphase daughter micronuclei in this cell. Three
daughter micronuclei can be seen at or near the ends of these
separation spindles. Bar = 40µm. Pictures taken by M. Aihara on Kodak
Tri-X film using a Zeiss Universal microscope with epifluorescence
illumination. Published in J. Protozool. 35:400-407, 1988.
