Fig. 25: late stationary phase cell with many peroxisomes

In a culture age study very late stationary phase cells (17 days post-inoculation) seemed to have a proliferation of small peroxisomes (per). Although not treated to show their tubules, the tubules stood out as darkly stained against a medium-dense homogenous background. One peroxisome is docked at a lipid body (lip). This cell might have already proceeded into death phase as the cytoplasm appears unusually empty of matrix material. m, mitochondrion. EM taken on 5/29/80 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM. Neg. 12,250X. Bar = 0.5µm. Part published in Paramecium, H.-D. Gortz, ed., Springer-Verlag, Berlin, p.12, 1988.
