Hundreds of axonemal dynein ATPase arms radiate from each of the nine doublets of the cilium. Electron opaque densities occupy the center of the basal body. Various bridging elements are found at both the distal and proximal ends of the basal body and the proximal end of the cilium. At the apex of the ridge is a gap (arrow) in the epiplasm (ep), which is the name of the fibrous coat on the cytosolic side of the inner alveolar membrane. al, alveolus; ee, early endosome; kd, kinetodesmal fiber.
