Fig. 4: basal body-cilium complex

Longitudinally sectioned basal body (bb) and cilium (c) showing the transition zone between these two connected bodies. The outer doublets of the axoneme arise directly from the microtubules of the triplet microtubular fibers of the basal body (bb). One of the singlet microtubules arises from an axosome (ax) at the proximal end of the cilium and the second singlet arises somewhat distal to this axosome. Electron opaque cross-sectioned kinetodesmal fibers (kd) occupy the right (cell’s left) margins of the longitudinally oriented ridges. (For three dimensional orientation see Figure 23 in Allen, J Cell Biol. 49:1-20, 1971; also see Dute and Kung, J. Cell Biol 78:451-464, 1978). gf, granulo-fibrillar material; ee, early endosome; ep, epiplasm. Collidine buffered fixative. EM taken on 5/21/70 by R. Allen with Hitachi HU11A TEM. Neg. 27,500X. Bar = 0.2µm.
