The axoneme is composed of 9 doublet fibers (microtubules) and two central singlets. Each doublet is tilted slightly to the tangent of the axoneme. Two dynein arms protrude from each A subfiber. Nexin links pass between the doublets and spokes pass from each doublet toward the two singlets in the center of the axoneme. Additional loops encircle the singlets and thickenings provide structural detail along the spokes. Published in J. Cell Biol. 37:825-831, 1968.
